A hummingbird may perch on your finger to drink nectar. Grassquits may take seed from your hand. Other species come to the feeders and birdbaths nearby.

Watch, photograph, ask questions, look out over the harbour. Most guests stay an hour to an hour and a half.
The birds you may see
More than 140 species have been recorded here, and around forty visit the feeders and birdbaths regularly. On a typical visit guests see somewhere between ten and twenty, depending on season, weather and what is fruiting in the wild.
North American warblers pass through in the winter months. Because every bird is wild and free-flying, no two visits are quite the same.

About fifteen minutes from central Montego Bay, then half a mile up the hill. The final approach to the sanctuary is along a narrow, winding, steep and bumpy mountain road.
By taxi or private driver
The most common way to arrive. If you’re staying in a hotel, your hotel concierge or host can usually arrange a suitable taxi or private driver. Services such as JUTA and Uber also operate in the area.
Waiting time
Ask your driver to include one to one-and-a-half hours of waiting time. Confirm the waiting charge along with the fare before you set off.
Driving yourself
Use a vehicle with reasonable clearance. The final half mile is narrow, steep, winding and sometimes bumpy, it’s a Jamaican country road.
Cruise passengers
Rocklands is a short drive from the Montego Bay pier. Allow around two and a half hours in total for travel and the visit.
What to bring
Comfortable, casual clothing and footwear suited to a countryside setting. Beyond that, very little.
Please keep your hands clean
Avoid insect repellent, sunscreen, hand cream or lotion on your hands. These products can harm the birds that come to feed from them.

Do I need to make a reservation?
No. Reservations are not required and walk-in guests are welcome; walk-in visits are paid in cash. If you prefer, reserve through FareHarbor to select your date and time and pay electronically in advance.
Have you reopened after the passing of Hurricane Melissa?
Yes. Rocklands is open every day from 10:00am to 5:00pm. We are welcoming visitors while restoration continues, so some facilities are limited — the walking trails are currently closed. We appreciate your patience.
What are your admission prices?
International visitors: US$30 per adult, US$10 for children under 13. Jamaican residents: J$2,500 per adult, J$1,500 for children under 13. Prices are subject to change, so please check when planning your visit.
What does a visit to Rocklands Bird Sanctuary involve?
Rocklands is a peaceful bird sanctuary with no caged birds. It is set in the wooded hills overlooking Montego Bay Harbour.
After leaving the main road, you will travel approximately half a mile along a steep, winding and sometimes bumpy country road. Consider the journey part of the adventure—to experience a truly special encounter with nature, you must leave the urban environment behind.
When you arrive, you will enter a rustic cottage-garden setting. You will sit beneath covered patios, where our hosts will show you how to feed the birds and help you identify some of the more than 40 species that visit the sanctuary.
Wild hummingbirds may perch on your fingers to drink nectar, while tiny Grassquits may come to your hand for seed. The birds are completely wild and uncaged, so every visit is different.
This is a slow-paced, relaxing experience in which the birds and nature set the pace. Slow down, savour the moment and enjoy an experience you will remember for a lifetime.
How long should I allow for my visit?
The average visit lasts approximately 1 to 1½ hours. Some guests may wish to stay a little longer to relax, watch the birds and take photographs.
Will I definitely get to feed a hummingbird?
Our hummingbirds are wild and free to come and go, so wildlife encounters can never be guaranteed. However, hummingbirds feed frequently—often approximately every 15 minutes—and are usually nearby and ready to feed.
You must be patient, remain still and follow your guide’s instructions so the birds feel comfortable approaching you.
Your experience will depend on the birds, weather, time of day and other natural conditions. Patience and quiet observation usually produce the best encounters.
What kinds of birds might I see?
More than 40 bird species visit Rocklands from time to time. These may include Jamaica’s famous Red-billed Streamertail—also known as the Doctor Bird—Jamaican Mango hummingbirds, Bananaquits, Grassquits, Jamaican Orioles, Orangequits, Hopping Dicks, nightingales, woodpeckers and several varieties of flycatcher.
North American warblers may also be seen during the winter months.
The species and number of birds seen will vary because all our birds are wild and uncaged.
What is the best time of day to visit?
The sanctuary is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and birds may visit throughout the day. Birds are often especially active during the early morning and before sunset.
Because these are wild birds, their activity changes according to the weather and other natural conditions. Allow enough time to sit quietly, relax and let the birds come to you or visit the nearby feeders.
Can I arrange a private guided birding walk?
Yes. Private guided birding walks in the surrounding area must be booked in advance with Fritz by WhatsApp at +1 (876) 527-9225.
Walks are normally conducted between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and cost US$30 per person, per hour. Fritz is an exceptional birder with eyes like an eagle.
All walks are subject to prevailing weather, trail and environmental conditions.
Do you provide transportation?
No, we do not provide transportation.
We recommend asking your hotel concierge or accommodation host for help arranging a suitable taxi or private driver. Transportation may also be booked through services such as Uber or JUTA.
Before entering the vehicle, confirm the total price, including all fees and charges. Ask your driver to include approximately 1 to 1½ hours of waiting time so you can enjoy the sanctuary without feeling rushed.
If you are travelling from farther away, agree on your pickup and return arrangements in advance.
What is the road to the sanctuary like?
The final section of the journey is approximately half a mile along a steep, narrow, winding and sometimes bumpy country road.
Many people travel up our hill every day, but please remember that it is a Jamaican country road. Use a suitable vehicle or an experienced local driver who knows the area.
Take your time and enjoy the journey as part of the Rocklands experience—leaving the city behind to discover the wonders of nature.
Do you accept cards or electronic payments?
Electronic payment is available when you reserve through FareHarbor. On-site payments are cash only; we cannot accept credit or debit cards at the sanctuary.
Do you serve meals or refreshments?
No — we only serve meals to the birds. Please eat before arriving and bring drinking water and any other personal essentials.
Are the patios covered?
Yes. Feeding takes place beneath open-sided, covered patios that give some protection from sun and light rain. This is still an outdoor nature experience, so weather affects bird activity.
Do you have restrooms on-site?
Yes, restrooms are available on-site.
Is the sanctuary wheelchair accessible?
Yes. Wheelchair access is available to the patio areas.
We do our best to accommodate visitors with disabilities and other special needs, but our resources and the natural hillside setting are limited. Please contact us before your visit so we can discuss your individual requirements and assist wherever possible.
Is there a limit on group size?
Yes. We do not recommend groups larger than 10 people. With advance arrangements, we may be able to accommodate up to 20 guests at one time.
Rocklands is a small and intimate nature experience, not a mass-tourism attraction. Smaller groups help maintain the peaceful atmosphere and provide a better experience for visitors and birds.
Is Rocklands suitable for children?
Families are welcome, but the experience is not recommended for children under six years old.
The encounter requires visitors to sit quietly and remain still for periods so the wild birds are not frightened. We leave it to parents and guardians to decide whether the experience is suitable for their child’s age and temperament.
When making your decision, please consider the comfort of the birds and other guests. Children must be supervised closely and encouraged to remain quiet and gentle around the birds.
Can I take photographs and videos?
Yes. Guests are welcome to take photographs and videos for personal use. Flash photography is allowed.
Move slowly, remain quiet and avoid disturbing or chasing the birds. Please ask permission before photographing staff members or other visitors.
Professional photography sessions must be arranged with us in advance.

Because this is an outdoor nature experience, weather can still affect bird activity and operating conditions.

Bird activity and private walks are subject to prevailing weather and environmental conditions.
The patio areas provide some shelter, but heavy rain, strong winds or unsafe road and trail conditions may affect the experience. Contact us if you are uncertain about conditions before travelling, or check the local weather forecast.
How can I help protect the birds?
Please remain quiet, follow your host’s instructions and feed the birds only with the nectar or seed provided by the sanctuary.
Make sure your hands are free from hand cream, lotion, insect repellent, sunscreen or other products that could affect the birds.
Do not chase, grab or attempt to catch the birds. Remember that every bird at Rocklands is wild, uncaged and free to leave at any time.
