The covered patios are where every visit happens. Rebuilding and extending them means more shade for guests and more shelter for the birds.
Solar power & batteries
Power on the hill is unreliable at the best of times. Solar and battery storage keep the water pumps, feeders and lights running.
Plumbing & restrooms
Restoring the water lines and restrooms so the sanctuary can host guests comfortably again.
Replanting the gardens
The storm stripped the flowering plants the hummingbirds feed in. Replanting continues season by season.

Rebuilding after Hurricane Melissa
Melissa came across St. James as a Category 5 storm. It took the roof off the staff house, flattened the patios, and stripped the flowering gardens the hummingbirds feed in. Nobody was hurt. The birds came back within days, and we have been rebuilding ever since.

The Manager’s Cottage roof has been fully replaced, providing safe housing for our dedicated staff.
